On Cold Winter Day, Head to the New Celtic on Market for Some Hot Irish Stew and Whiskey Cider

Winter storms in Denver don’t usually last long — but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get cold. And there’s nothing I love better on a cold winter day than a hot glass of whiskey cider and a plate of lamb stew. So it’s a good thing The Celtic on Market (which recently moved from Blake & 18th streets to Market & 14th) has both of those. It’s the perfect place to escape to during lunch or after work. Don’t expect anything too fancy — but do expect coziness and traditional Irish charm. The people are friendly, the drinks are cheap (HH is Mon-Thu 3-7pm and includes $3 domestic drafts, $3 well drinks, and $3.50 house wines), and there’s almost always space available..

The Celtic is really a Denver institution (having been here for more than 16 years), so if you’ve never been here, you’ve got to see it. It’s in a new location, but it feels very much the same (with a few improvements). A lot of the decor has been moved over, but there are now beautiful windows letting in the sunshine all throughout the main floor — and the downstairs has cozy little alcoves and overstuffed chairs that make you feel right at home.

If you’re feeling like eating something more substantial, my favorite here has always been the Jeremiah’s Steak and Murphy’s Pie (think steak and mushroom pot pie) — or the Galway Bay Seafood Casserole (pictured below). It’s a creamy concoction of scallops, shrimp, crab, fish, cheese, and potatoes.

Seafood casserole at CelticThe Celtic is also the only spot downtown for off-track betting on horse or dog races, if that’s your thing. (That’s mainly downstairs.) It’s definitely the place to be on Derby Day to place your bets (and also to watch the races if you don’t feel like going to the huge party down the street).
